Help Celebrate the 10th Annual National Endangered Species Day!
Dear Plant Conservation Alliance Members,
As you may know, May 15, 2015 is the 10th annual national Endangered
Species Day.
On and around the date, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park
Service, U.S. Forest Service and NOAA will join numerous plant conservation
groups and botanic gardens, zoos, aquariums, museums, conservation groups,
schools and other organizations to recognize this important milestone.
There will be tours, open houses, clean up and other restoration projects,
special presentations, children’s activities and other events throughout
the country.
There are several ways you can participate:
- Organize milkweed plantings at various locations. Our goal is to have
at least 100 plantings throughout the country, many of which can be
organized by your organization/members. The Endangered Species Day site
will feature planting tips and other resources.
- You can also coordinate a restoration project or invasive weed pull
event; make a presentation to a school, church or civic group; offer
behind-the-scenes tours of your propagation facilities; and/or co-host an
event with a nearby zoo or other organization.
This is not only a great opportunity to help educate the public about
endangered species/habitat conservation, but also showcase the excellent
work you do on a regular basis. And as members of PCA, your organization
can help raise awareness of the 886 federally listed endangered and
threatened plant species native to the United States and its territories.
You can celebrate on May 15, that weekend earlier in the week or another
date in May.
The Endangered Species Day website (http://www.endangeredspeciesday.org)
provides a range of resources, including stickers, bookmarks, coloring
activity sheets, fliers and other material that can be downloaded and
printed.
Please contact David Robinson, Endangered Species Day Director, with
questions or suggestions: drobinson at endangered.org
Thanks for helping to make the 10th annual Endangered Species Day the most
successful yet.
Happy Holidays.
