Botany Program Manager, MT Natural Heritage Program (911-254)

The Botany Program Manager manages the Botany Program within MTNHP and
serves as the program's lead botanist. S/He develops information and
partnerships that support effective management of Montana's plant species
of concern and their habitats. S/He works with botanists in partner
agencies and institutions to identify and accurately rank species of
concern, and to assemble information on their distribution, status, ecology
and management.

The Botany Program Manager provides technical and scientific leadership in
the development, analysis, dissemination and application of botanical
information for the Montana Natural Heritage Program. Primary duties
include:

   - Designing and conducting inventory and applied research;
   - Securing funding and scientific support for research and survey
   activities;
   - Coordinating the collection, management and analysis of botanical
   information, which may include the University of Montana herbarium
   collection;
   - Developing and managing projects;
   - Writing reports and developing other information products;
   - Designing, developing and maintaining spatial, tabular and image
   databases;
   - Building collaboration among public agencies, private consultants,
   academics and others;
   - Strategic planning and program development;
   - And providing consultation and expertise on species' status,
   management, research and conservation.
   - May supervise full time, part-time, seasonal employees, or contractors
   as needed.

The Montana Natural Heritage Program (MTNHP) was created by the Montana
legislature in 1983 as part of the Natural Resources Information System at
the Montana State Library for the purposes of acquisition, storage, and
retrieval of data relating to the flora, fauna, and biological community
types of Montana (MCA 90-15). The MTNHP is operated by The University of
Montana (UM) through a contract with the Montana State Library, which has
statutory authority and receives legislative funding for the core program.
The MTNHP's activities are guided by the statute and through ongoing
interaction with and feedback from, principal data source agencies. The
Montana Natural Heritage Program (MTNHP) serves as the state's principal
source of information on species, habitats and landscapes of concern.

Required Experience

   - Master's degree or higher in Botany or a related natural science area
   and 3-5 years relevant professional experience or an equivalent combination
   of education and experience, including demonstrated proficiency in
   vegetation inventory and monitoring techniques, research design, field
   sampling methods and geographic information systems.
   - Familiarity with Natural Heritage methodology and databases desired.
   - Demonstrated expertise in plant taxonomy and systematics, with a focus
   on species of the Rocky Mountain West, especially rare species.
   - Knowledge of plant species, habitats, and ecosystem processes in
   Montana and the principles of applying botanical information to
   on-the-ground conservation and management.
   - Demonstrated ability and experience in expressing ideas clearly and
   concisely in oral, written and graphic form.
   - Ability to assemble and organize scientific data, perform statistical
   analyses, and prepare reports of findings.
   - Demonstrated proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel,
   and Powerpoint)
   - Demonstrated proficiency with database software ( including Microsoft
   Access) including the ability to design, manage, and utilize relational
   databases
   - Experience with GIS Software such as ESRI's ArcMap; ability to query
   and edit spatial data.
   - Ability to use advanced computer functions and to manipulate, analyze
   and interpret data.
   - Knowledge of current trends in botany and plant conservation.
   - Demonstrated successful experience in developing, securing funding,
   directing and managing multiple projects.
