New Milwaukee park creates an oak savanna in urban area
By Lee Bergquist <lbergquist at journalsentinel.com> of the Journal Sentinel
Sept. 21, 2013

When visitors walk through the stone archway of the 40-acre Milwaukee
Rotary Centennial Arboretum, they'll be greeted by an endangered landscape.

The oak savanna in Milwaukee's newest park was built from massive piles of
dirt that had to be trucked in and bulldozed into a cluster of undulating,
grassy berms, arrayed with newly planted oaks.

The $8.5 million arboretum, which opens Saturday, has been designed as a
giant outdoor classroom. The savanna, once widespread in southern
Wisconsin, is one of a dozen ecological communities that can be found in
the park.
