Position Title: Seed Collection Coordinator for the Mid-Atlantic Regional
Seed Bank

Employer: The Greenbelt Native Plant Center, NYC Department of Parks.

Start Date: Immediate (No later than March 1st, 2013)

Employment Duration: Through December 31, 2013, with possibility for
extension

Salary: Negotiable

Main Functions: The Seed Collection Coordinator for MARS-B will function as
the lead for all
second year activities of MARS-B related to seed collections and to the
development of a
network of trained collectors.

Duties: Under the direction and guidance of GNPC staff:

- Assist in partner outreach, promotion, and execution of 5 seed collection
training workshops throughout the mid-Atlantic region in 2013.
- Oversee the seed collection stewards program and oversee and assist any
contract and or volunteer collectors for MARS-B
- Make seed collections and assist others in the ecoregion level III
collection of multiple ash species across their mid-Atlantic ranges. This
will require coordination with the National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS)
Ash Conservation Program, liaison with and coordination of potential
collaborators, reconnaissance of regional populations, and collections made
according to
national protocols.
- Assist in other seed collections based on priority lists developed by
MARS-B.
- Receive and accession all seed collections made for MARS-B. Process,
package, store and/or send to respective facilities.
- As time allows, assist the director of the GNPC in the outreach to
and management of the network of partners, collaborators, volunteers, etc.
enlisted to participate in MARS-B.

Working Conditions:

- Flexible 40 hour work week
- Field work will include exposure to elements, insects, and poisonous
plants
- Extensive driving and overnight trips will be required throughout the
mid-Atlantic region.
- Home base office provided at the Greenbelt Native Plant Center in Staten
Island, NY

Employment Requirements:

- Familiarity with the mid-Atlantic flora and/or experience in applied
taxonomy and the ability to work with dichotomous keys
- Seed collection and processing experience and/or familiarity will the
Seeds of Success national collection protocols
- Valid driver’s license
- Field work experience including habitat or plant community delineation
and plant identification
- Experience with GPS and GIS technologies, Microsoft Office suite, and
BG-Base
- Minimum of a bachelors degree in botany, plant ecology, or related fields
- High level of organizational skill; ability to self-motivate and
work independently, and often alone.
