INHS is seeking a Botanist to conduct vegetation surveys with a focus on
threatened and endangered species and natural areas at statewide project
sites under a program established by contract with the Illinois
Department of Transportation (IDOT).
Project description: This IDOT funded program focuses on botanical field
surveys and data collection throughout the state of Illinois. This
position will be located in Champaign, Illinois.
Job description: Conduct vegetation surveys at IDOT project areas
throughout Illinois with a focus on threatened and endangered plant
species and natural areas. Record data on characteristics of vegetation,
typically involving qualitative assessments. Collect voucher specimens
when necessary to verify species determinations and contribute to the
botanical collections of the Illinois Natural History Survey. Write
technical reports of findings, submit for internal review, and meet
report deadlines. When time allows, participate in or develop independent
program of research and seek external funding when needed.
Qualifications: Must possess a minimum of a Masters degree in plant
biology or related field with an emphasis in plant community ecology or
systematics. Must be able to work independently, collect and analyze
field data, and coherently translate findings both verbally and in
writing to granting agencies and to scientific and lay communities. Field
experience, knowledge of collecting techniques for herbaria and knowledge
of the Illinois flora and natural community classifications are required.
Must have the ability to interpret maps and aerial photographs. Must have
a valid driver's license and be able to work for extensive periods
outside from spring through fall seasons under a variety of weather
conditions.
Salary: $38,000 - $50,000 per year commensurate with experience and
education.
These are regular, academic professional, full-time grant supported
12-month positions. The estimated starting date is April 1, 2012. This
position likely will be for two years with the possibility of extension.
