Dear IUCN SSC Plant SG Chairs, Plant Red List Authorities Chairs, and Red List Partners,
In 2012 the IUCN Species Survival Commission will be giving a new Plant Conservation award established by the Plant Conservation Sub-Committee. All SSC plant Specialist Groups and Red List Authorities, and Red List partners, are eligible to nominate candidates to receive this award.
David Given Award for Excellence in Plant Conservation
Description
The purpose of this new award is to enhance the profile of plant conservation and encourage outstanding efforts of young plant conservation professionals. This award is named for Dr. David Given to honour his outstanding contributions to SSC and more broadly to plant conservation.
This award will be presented to individuals or groups of individuals in early career (up to age 40 years) who have made a significant contribution to plant conservation over the 5 years preceding each award. Recipients will not necessarily be SSC members, but will have contributed to SSC’s priorities and to the implementation of the targets of the Global Plant Conservation Strategy through activities such as:

• Production of outstanding, practical, scientific information on plants useful for conservation purposes

• Significant contribution to the conservation of rare or highly threatened plant species

• Active in situ or ex situ conservation of wild, socio-economically important plant species

• Identification and conservation of Important Plant Areas

• Global and regional plant conservation status assessments

• Elaboration of the Sampled Red List Index (SRLI) for plants
This award will be made for the first time during IUCN’s 5th World Conservation Congress in Jeju, Republic of Korea, in early September 2012, and will subsequently be made biennially in venues where plant conservation activities also need greater recognition and where the award can highlight SSC’s work in the wider botanical community. The recipient does not need to be present to receive the award when it is announced.
Please send any nominations for this award to Claire.santer at iucn.org<mailto:Claire.santer at iucn.org> no later than 20 April 2012, with the following information:

1. Name and contact details of the person being nominated.

2. Name of the award for which the person in question is being proposed.

3. A short statement (not more than two pages) outlining the career of the person being nominated, and the reasons why this person should be considered for this award.

4. Name and contact details of the person who is doing the nominating.
The SSC Plant Conservation Sub-Committee has formed a selection panel, and this panel might contact you for additional information. We look forward to receiving your nominations for this new plant conservation award.
Yours sincerely,
Danna J Leaman
Deputy Chair, IUCN-SSC Plant Conservation Sub-Committee
