muy solicitado. La nueva versión en español hace más accesible a los
productores y profesionales agrícolas hispanohablantes la última información

El folleto traducido, Cultivando para los Polinizadores, les ofrece a los
hispanohablantes un resumen de cómo y dónde los productores pueden
proporcionar comida y refugio a los polinizadores. Los setos vivos, campos

PORTLAND, Ore. and SACRAMENTO, Calif. Working with USDA Natural Resources
Conservation Service (NRCS) staff in California, the Xerces Society for
Invertebrate Conservation has released Cultivando para los Polinizadores, a
Spanish language version of Farming for Pollinators. Over 50,000 copies of
the English language version of this brochure have already been distributed
to farmers and agriculture professionals across the U.S. since it was
published in 2005, and demand is still high for additional copies. The new
Spanish-language version now makes the latest pollinator conservation
information more accessible to Hispanic farmers and farm professionals.

Cultivando para los Polinizadores offers Spanish speakers a summary of how
and where farmers can provide food and shelter for pollinators. Hedgerows,
fallow fields, road edges, cover crops, natural areas, and farm gardens all
play an important role in supplying pollen and nectar, not to mention safe
places for pollinators to nest and hibernate through the winter. The Xerces
Society's Pollinator Conservation Program staff has worked closely with the
California NRCS state office for more than five years to help private
landowners across California conserve this valuable habitat. In this time,
California NRCS helped to create approximately 32 miles of hedgerows that
benefit pollinators.

The work of bees and other pollinating insects often goes unnoticed, yet
these animals have a profound impact on our daily lives. More than a third
of our food supply relies on the plants they pollinate. However, today bees
are declining all across the U.S. because of habitat loss and pesticide use.

Ongoing research demonstrates that wild native bees can provide a
significant contribution to the pollination of many insect-pollinated crops,
and that the availability of suitable habitat and pesticide reduction are
crucial for them to be abundant on a farm. Appropriate flowers and careful
pesticide management are also critical for strengthening colonies of honey
bees housed around farms.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, between 1997 and 2007 the number of
farms operated by Hispanic farmers grew from 33,450 to 55,570, a 66%
increase. These farmers manage more than 20 million acres. Publications such
as Cultivando para los Polinizadores will help the USDA provide increased
assistance to historically underserved Hispanic growers interested in
conservation on their land.
