[PCA] The Fairchild Challenge/BGCI Global Competition 2011/12: PLANT CHAMPIONS

The Fairchild Challenge is an annual environmental education outreach 
program for elementary, middle and high schools that fosters interest in 
the environment  by encouraging students to: 

APPRECIATE the beauty and value of nature,
DEVELOP critical-thinking skills,
UNDERSTAND the need for biodiversity and conservation,
 TAP community resources, 
BECOME actively engaged citizens 
 and
RECOGNIZE that individuals do indeed make a difference. 

Established by Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in 2002, tens of 
thousands of students from the United States and abroad compete in The 
Fairchild Challenge each year and top-scoring schools are awarded cash 
prizes to support their schools? environmental programs. 

Since 2008, Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) has 
collaborated with The Fairchild Challenge to offer an annual Global 
Competition for students aged 11-19.  This year?s Global Competition is 
open to all botanic gardens worldwide, in addition to Fairchild Challenge 
sites, BGCI members and sites participating in Plant Conservation Day 
(including AZH members). 

This year's Global Competition is Plant Champions.  Students will research 
their region's plant biodiversity and represent it through the creation of 
an Olympic wreath. Photographs of the winning wreaths will be displayed in 
London during the 2012 Summer Olympics and will also be linked to the 
London 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games Inspire Programme, which enables 
non-commercial organizations across the United Kingdom to link their 
events and projects to the London 2012 Games in an official scope.
