Flora dines on unwary fauna
Larry Mellichamp preserves carnivorous plants through research, growing 
hybrids at UNCC

Larry Mellichamp's passion for carnivorous plants was born at dusk in the 
Green Swamp Preserve in 1968. His UNC Charlotte botany professor had sent 
him to collect specimens from the famous pocosin wetland in southeastern 
North Carolina. After driving and slogging through bogs all day, 
Mellichamp discovered a purple pitcher plant growing in a ditch, right 
next to the wheel of his parked car.
