Species Introductions & Re-introductions:
Opportunities & Challenges
April 8-9, 2010
Starkville, MS

One of the critical issues facing natural resource managers today
concerns the opportunities of re-establishing species to their former
range and the challenges of species that have been introduced to ranges to
which they are not native. This issue extends across aquatic and
terrestrial environments and thus the American Fisheries Society and The
Wildlife Society have partnered to co-host a symposium that addresses the
ecological, social and economic issues concerning species introductions
and re-introductions, planned or not planned, desired or not desired. We
hope that this will be the first of many cooperative ventures between AFS
and TWS.

Invited speakers will bring all participants to common ground on the topic
and submitted papers by scientists will be presented to bring participants
up to date on the ecological, social and economic impacts of
introductions. The symposium will conclude with a panel discussion on the
strategy that the two professional societies (AFS, TWS) should implement
to be proactive on species introductions and re-introductions.

Call for Abstracts

We invite natural resources professionals and students to submit abstracts
for consideration for the first cooperative symposium of the American
Fisheries Society (AFS) and The Wildlife Society (TWS). Abstracts must be
submitted electronically via the symposium website by February 1, 2010.
Abstracts will be reviewed by an editorial panel and authors of selected
abstracts will be invited to submit a paper for publication in the
symposium proceedings and give a 20-minute presentation (15 minutes for
presentation, 5 minutes for questions) at Mississippi State University in
Starkville, MS. An itinerary of presentations will be developed and you
will be notified of the specific date/time assigned for your presentation.
