JOB SUMMARY:
NSF Program Directors bear the primary responsibility for carrying out the
agency's overall mission to support innovative and merit-reviewed
activities in basic research and education that contribute to the nation's
technical strength, security, and welfare. To fulfill this responsibility
requires not only knowledge in the appropriate disciplines, but also a
commitment to high standards, a considerable breadth of interest and
receptivity to new ideas, a strong sense of fairness, good judgment, and a
high degree of personal integrity.
The Division of Integrative Organismal Systems (IOS) is seeking qualified
candidates for a permanent Program Director in its Plant Genome Research
Program. The Plant Genome Research Program (PGRP) supports basic research
on the structures and functions of plant genomes with a focus on plants
and plant processes of economic importance. The PGRP includes Basic
Research to Enable Agricultural Development (BREAD), which supports basic
research to build a foundation for generating sustainable, science-based
solutions to problems of agriculture in developing countries, testing
innovative hypotheses leading to novel and creative approaches and
technologies.
IOS supports fundamental research aimed at an integrative understanding of
organisms. The goal is to predict why plants, animals and microbes are
structured the way they are, and function as they do. Projects that
innovatively apply systems biology approaches (i.e., approaches that
combine experimentation, computation and modeling, and which led to new
conceptual and theoretical insights and predictions about integrated
Organismal properties that may be experimentally verified) are
particularly encouraged. Scientific emphases range across multiple levels
of biological organization, from molecular through ecological, and include
the use of theoretical as well as advanced computational techniques.
Areas of research include scientists from all areas of biology, behavioral
science, physical science, mathematics, engineering and computer science.
