Director of Horticulture
Job Description
Historic London Town and Gardens is seeking a highly motivated and
experienced Director of Horticulture who is a flexible, hands-on
individual with strong horticultural, managerial, and public relations
skills. The Director of Horticulture must possess a solid knowledge of
horticultural practices in a public garden setting. This position is
full-time and reports to the Executive Director.
Historic London Town and Gardens is a 23-acre park owned by Anne Arundel
County and operated by the London Town Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)(3)
organization. The park, located on the South River at the site of a 1683
colonial tobacco port, features history, archaeology, education and
horticulture. The gardens consist of an 8-acre woodland garden,
ornamental, environmental and historic gardens.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Direct the care and maintenance of the 23-acre site and gardens in all
horticultural aspects, including design. planting, propagation, watering,
dividing, weeding and other hands-on functions as needed.
2. Direct, plan and conduct spring and fall plant sales, and other
revenue-producing special events.
3. Coordinate, on a regular basis, with staff members responsible for
interpretation and education programs and special events.
4. Supervise garden volunteers, master gardeners, guides and interns.
5. Work with Anne Arundel County horticultural staff to coordinate care
and maintenance of site and gardens.
6. Develop a garden and site management plan.
Job Requirements:
1. Possess a B. S. degree in horticulture, botany or closely related field
or equivalent experience.
2. Strong horticultural skills in plant identification including woodland,
native, ornamental and heirloom plants.
3. Experience with managing a public garden in all aspects from planning
to horticulture and design.
4. The ability to work outside and physically care for the site and
gardens.
5. Familiarity with the Chesapeake region's growing climate.
6. Experience in supervising and working with volunteers.
7. Experience in conducting public programs, including plants sales,
workshops, lectures and special programs. Experience and ability to
develop new programs.
8. Excellent oral and written communication skills; comfortable with
public speaking.
9. Certified in pesticide application, desired.
10. Willing to work some evenings and weekends.
11. Strong computer skills.
