American colonists once watched for the spring bloom of the Nantucket
shadbush <http://nymf.bbg.org/species/614>, a sign that it was warm enough
to bury the winter’s dead.

face extinction, a result of urban development and the encroachment of
invasive plants from foreign lands, scientists from the Brooklyn Botanic
Garden<http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/b/brooklyn_botanic_garden/index.html?inline=nyt-org>report.
