Pat Johnston, the West Eugene Wetlands Restoration Manager for BLM, has
accepted our invitation to join us at the next Plant Conservation Alliance
meeting (May 13, 9:30am - more details below). She is in town to receive
two awards for partnership work being undertaken at the West Eugene
Wetlands (the DOI Partners in Conservation Award & the BLM National
Volunteer Award). Partners on this project include members of our federal
PCA Members (BLM, FWS, and USACE), as well as a non-governmental PCA
Cooperator (The Nature Conservancy)!
The West Eugene Wetlands is a nearly 3,000-acre complex of wetlands and
associated uplands located near downtown Eugene, Oregon. Since the 1990s,
there has been an ambitious effort to conserve and restore the wetlands.
The West Eugene Wetlands Partnership was formed in 1994 between multiple
agencies and non-profit organizations to work together on protecting and
restoring the wetlands, and providing outreach and education opportunities
based upon the objectives of the West Eugene Wetlands Plan. The
Partnership also began the Ethnobotany Resource Area Project (now in its
third year), which is an effort to reincorporate indigenous practices into
resource management of the area. This highly successful ecological
restoration project is also part of the BLM-led Seeds of Success (S.O.S.)
program, which collects, researches, and preserves germplasm for native
plant development.
See you there!
