POSITION VACANCY
Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden
Field Botanist
The Species and Habitat Conservation Group of the Center for Tropical
Plant Conservation at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden seeks a Field
Botanist. The Field Botanist will assist with ongoing endangered plant
conservation research in South Florida. Specific duties include
collecting ecological data, mapping rare plant and insect populations
using GPS and GIS technologies; conducting field and laboratory
experiments; data entry; gathering and synthesizing existing literature;
update, expand, and help maintain the South Florida Rare Plant Database;
assisting with ex situ collection maintenance and propagation; assisting
with coordination of group events such as weeding projects and plant
introductions; representing Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden Conservation
Program to lay, government, and scientific groups through oral
presentations, lay and scientific publications; tracking budget
expenditures, purchasing supplies, writing annual reports and scientific
publications. The Field Botanist reports to the Conservation Ecologist/
Team leader. This position is grant-funded for 1 year with opportunity
for extension as funding allows.
Qualifications: BS or MS degree in conservation biology, environmental
studies, ecology, botany, forestry, or geography; excellent written and
oral communication; experience in biological surveys and monitoring;
mapping with GPS unit; data collection, entry and analysis; knowledge of
endangered plant species issues and familiarity with South Florida native
plants and ecosystems; knowledge of horticulture, plant identification;
ability to work cooperatively with Fairchild colleagues as well as
independently; computer literacy in MS Word, Excel, statistical software,
and ArcGIS software; ability to perform demanding outdoor physical labor
in hot and humid conditions, lift and carry 30 lbs, and hike in uneven
terrain for 2 miles; and must have a valid Florida operator.s license, own
vehicle and be willing to make field visits; mileage will be reimbursed.
