Wow, what a bizarre article. On the one hand, it sounds like artificial turf has a lot going for it, but the thought of it gives me the creeps. What are we doing to do this planet? What about all insects and birds that are not going to be nourished by plastic? And all the microorganisms getting stifled below it? Not that lawns are particularly nourishing, but one would hope they would be slightly more alive than plastic. Isn't there some form of xeriscaping that could be used in place of lawns?
Here in MD I've been encouraging people to eliminate lawns and plant natives, and so far I've had a very positive response. We don't have the water problems that California has, but we do have dreadfully hot summers that are tough on lawns and the people mowing them, so I promote going lawn free as a way to avoid that chore while inviting pollinators to frolic in the yard. I do wonder if I'll be confronted some day with a local ordinance saying having a yard full of perennials and no lawn is illegal.

Calif. cities consider green alternatives to lawns
By NOAKI SCHWARTZ -- 18 hours ago
GARDEN GROVE, Calif. (AP) -- Cookie Smith was surprised to learn the fake
lawn that earned her a home-beautification award violated a city ban on
artificial grass.
Her neighbor was shocked when he complied with a state order to conserve
water and was instead threatened with a $50 fine for letting his grass
wither to a brittle brown.
