The hunt for the rarest of Oregon plants
Ecologist Tom Kaye stalks species in hopes of preserving them, even

CORVALLIS -- Tom Kaye had one clue. He found the nugget of information in
the Oregon State University Herbarium, a place he describes as "a plant
morgue." There, among 405,000 preserved specimens was a rare species that
once had been pressed flat between pieces of cardboard and glued to paper.
It was now the last known of its kind, the last of what once had been a
symbol of the Northwest landscape, the last of a species thought extinct
in Oregon.
