Position Announcement:

NATURAL AREAS STEWARDSHIP MANAGER

 

Organization: The Oakland Township Parks and Recreation Commission (PRC) is
a local elected park agency responsible for almost 1100 acres of Township
park land as well as the Oakland Township portion of the Paint Creek Trail.
The PRC manages a 10-year park millage as well as a 10-year land
preservation millage. These two millages fund all Township park/natural area
acquisition, planning, development, operation and maintenance.  

 

Oakland Township has demonstrated its long-term commitment to the
identification and preservation of natural areas through the purchase of
parks to protect these resources. Ten of the 12 parks acquired by the
Township contain defined high-priority natural areas, including glacial
lakes, prairie remnants, forests, a heronry, and Clinton River tributaries.
Conservation easements have been dedicated to protect key parkland natural
areas.

 

Position: The Natural Areas Stewardship Manager reports to the Director,
attends PRC meetings, and serves as an executive staff member at the Oakland
Township Department of Parks and Recreation in northeastern Oakland County,
Michigan. The majority of position's duties and activities are associated
with the management of the Township parks' natural areas to maintain
resource value. The Stewardship Manager collects natural areas information
and develops and implements plans for appropriate stewardship, which
includes: invasive species control; prescribed burning; native plant seed
processing; species monitoring and research; and arranging and overseeing
volunteer stewardship workdays. Daily communication with staff and the
public is expected. Responsibilities also include budgeting, contracting,
public relations and communication, supervision of stewardship staff, and
coordination of volunteer stewards. Must work nontraditional hours,
including evenings and weekends. 

 

Qualifications: Minimum of Bachelor's degree in Conservation Biology,
Ecology, Natural Resources Management/Planning or related field from an
accredited four-year college or university and three years of related
experience in ecosystem restoration, management and planning or equivalent
combination of education and experience. Great Lakes region field experience
is preferred. Strong knowledge of native plants and ecosystems of this
region preferred. Experience working with invasive species control,
herbicide application, prescribed burning and seed processing. Experience
supervising and managing volunteers and employees. Must possess valid
Michigan driver's license and good driving record. Willingness and ability
to obtain Current American Red Cross First Aid, CPR certifications and State
Commercial Pesticide Applicator's Certificate within 3 - 6 months of date of
employment.

Pay Rate and Starting Date: Salary range is $42,000 - $52,000. Salary will
be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Starting within four to
six weeks after position is awarded; employee will be expected to commence
work as a regular full-time employee of Oakland Township.
