BULK SEED SUPERVISOR

 

The City of New York/Parks & Recreation seeks an experienced Bulk Seed Production Supervisor for the Greenbelt Native Plant Center on Staten Island. Under the supervision of the nursery director and manager develop and implement a program to initiate production of bulk seed products of native species for use in the greater New York City region for projects on public lands. Duties include determination of species mix for each product, collection of wild seed, establishment, maintenance and harvest of founder seed plots and increase plots; processing, storage, testing, and labeling of bulk seed mixes. Overall responsibility for day-to-day management of the bulk seed program. Accurate record keeping, report preparation and supervisory skills a must.  Qualifications: Two years of full-time experience in gardening work. New York State Driver License, a Commercial Pesticide Applicator-Category 3A License required and New York City residency required within 90 days of hire. ASSISTANT GARDENERS

The City of New York/ Parks & Recreation seeks (3) candidates to fill Assistant Gardener positions for the Greenbelt Native Plant Center, Department of Parks, City of New York (Staten Island). All three positions are under the direct supervision of senior nursery staff and all three positions require supervision of others. The positions are: Nursery Yard Assistant Grower: assist in the yard production of containerized native plant materials; maintenance of nursery yard structures and irrigation systems; preparation of soil mixes; Seed Collection Assistant: assist with collection, record keeping, processing, and storage of native seed; Bulk Seed Production Assistant: assist in all aspects of production: preparation, seeding, maintenance, and harvesting of seed plots; processing, storage and testing of seed. All positions require ability to use heavy equipment and power horticultural tools and knowledge of native plant identification. Qualification requirements: One year of full-time experience in gardening work, including experience in each of the following: planting, cultivating and caring for trees, plants, shrubs and lawns; or 1. Thirty credits, at least fifteen of which must pertain to horticulture, agriculture or a related field from an accredited college or community college; or a certificate from a recognized horticultural or botanical program; or 2. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" or "2" above. 3. Motor vehicle Driver License valid in the state of New York. Preferred qualifications: Education or experience in the natural sciences, agronomy, or horticulture or related field and -year experience in related position preferred. Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Access, valid New York State driver license; and New York State Certified Pesticide Applicators license in category 3A or 7 preferred.
