Secretary General BGCI

The mission of Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) is to
build a world network for plant conservation to support sustainable
development and for the global environment. BGCI was founded in 1987 as
an independent charity and now includes over 500 member institutions in
115 countries, working to implement the Convention on Biological
Diversity's Global Strategy for Plant Conservation as well as An
International Agenda for Botanic Gardens in Conservation. BGCI also
supports the development of the part played by botanic gardens in their
local communities, including education, public awareness, tourism, and
recreation.

The present Secretary General is taking up a new appointment as Director
of the National Botanic Gardens in Ireland in the Spring of 2005. BGCI
wishes to recruit a new Secretary General, to be based at BGCI's
Headquarters in west London. 

The Secretary General is both leader and ambassador, defining and
communicating BGCI's agenda and vision, and leads the BGCI team to
achieve its mission and objectives. Working with the Board, the
Secretary General develops strategy and leads on delivery around the
world.

With proven leadership qualities, and outstanding diplomatic and
communications skills, candidates for this post will preferably have a
proven track record in the conservation/environmental sector, with
demonstrated sensitivity to complex, multicultural and multinational
institutions and structures. Working within a partnership model,
candidates must be able to show their capacity to innovate and manage
change. In addition, candidates must demonstrate their success in
identifying and supporting leaders within organisations and communities.
Candidates must also demonstrate an ability to inspire confidence among
corporate supporters, and have led on the development of significant
capital and revenue streams. A doctoral level qualification in a
relevant discipline is required, as well as a perfect mastery of
English, both oral and written.
