Ken Druse's book is very beautiful and inspiring. However, he, as many other 
garden writers addressing the use of native plants, does not address the very 
critical issue of introduction of non-local genotypes into the landscape, 
especially landscapes where the same species may reside in a truly natural area 
adjacent or near the planted site. Case in point on Long Island: the importation 
of Amelanchier canadensis non-local genotypes which are resistant to the red 
cedar rust into a beautiful population of shadbush which are not. 
Unfortunately this is a major challenging issue but there are very definite alternatives 
and major approaches which must be done in the industry. A big job but it can 
be done. We are working on public policy on LI to that end.  Karen Blumer
