The SCNPS 7th Annual Native Plant Symposium, hosted by the Upstate
Chapter, will be held April 23-25, 2004 at the Palmetto
Expo Center in Greenville. Registration is now open and you are
encouraged to sign up early! Program brochures are being
printed and will be mailed to all members soon. In the mean time, the
complete program brochure and registration form are
posted on our website at http://www.scnps.org/activities.html. Field trips
are limited and will fill up quickly.

Entitled "Jocassee, Jewel of the Upstate", the program will focus on the
flora and fauna of the Jocassee Gorges. In addition, as the SCDNR is
finalizing its management plan for the region, important management issues
facing Jocassee will be discussed.

Special guest speakers include:

 -Rudy Mancke, Host of SCETV's NatureScene
 -Peter White, Director of the Botanical Gardens at UNC
 -Deborah Green, Professor Emerita at the College of William & Mary
 -Tommy Wyche, nationally known attorney and conservationist

Saturday Sessions will include:

 -Unique Plant Communities of Jocassee - Patrick McMillan
 -Herpetology and Birds of Jocassee - Richard Montanucci, Drew Lanham
 -Michaux and Oconee Bell - Charlie Williams
 -History of Jocassee - David Van Lear
 -Ferns & Geology of Jocassee - Tom Goforth, John Garihan
 -Invasive Plants - Randy Westbrooks
 -Deer vs. Native Plants - Doug Rayner

Field trips will include

 -Cane Creek - Patrick McMillan
 -Little Caesar's Head - LL Gaddy
 -Shooting Tree Tract - Mark Hall, Wes Cooler & Rudy Mancke
 -Sassafras Mountain - Dennis Chastain & Bert Pittman
 -Lake Jocassee Boat Tour - Bill Marrell
