Hi, everyone.

A discussion on the Plant Conservation Alliance listserve led me to this
pdf article:

 (http://www.appliedeco.org/Reports/restoration%20source%20genetics.pdf):

Kaye, T.N. 2001. Common ground and controversy in native plant
restoration: the SOMS debate, source distance, plant selections, and a
restoration-oriented definition of native. In, Native Plant Propagation
and Restoration Strategies. R. Rose and D. Haase, editors. Nursery
Technology Cooperative and Western Forestry and Conservation
Association, Corvallis, Oregon.

It's an excellent overview (from a keynote talk). SOMS stands for
Single Or Multiple Sources. Not discussed are the influence of
pollination vectors and seed dispersers. Chris Frye gave a talk at the
Eastern Native Grass Symposium several years ago, in which he pointed
out that when pollen or seed travels many miles, there really aren't any
local ecotypes, it's all one common population.
