Subject: American Elm

I own property in Granville, Ohio across which, by easement, is a petroleum
pipeline. At the outer edge of a part of that easement stands a mature,
disease-free American Elm that was there when the pipeline was installed
sometime in the mid 1960s . Its trunk circumference is about 10' 9'' at eye
level. I understand there are fewer than 5000 such trees left in North
America.

I have been notified by Marathon Ashland Pipe Line LLC that, after some
forty years, they have decided for the first time to clear-cut the fifty
feet of their easement along its length across my property. They plan to cut
everything higher than 3' which includes the American Elm, two Sugar Maples,
11 Pines, 15 Arbor vitae, a native Apple tree, a flowering Crab, and more
than a dozen ornamental shrubs.

While I guess they may have the legal right to clear-cut their easement
(which breaks my heart), I wonder if you can send me any information about
somehow protecting the American Elm.

Thank you for any help you can give me.

Regards,

John Thornborough
