The nature of human nature is that we are all at different levels of consciousness, though we share the same great life. I completely understand why someone poaches or performs any illegal act. Sometimes laws are not just or the system is set up in such a way that not everyone who wants to make a living the way they like can. Herbalists should know this better than most as any in the practice of herbal medicine outside naturopathy, integrated MDs, or TCM have been practicing illegally for decades; treating people with cancer, heart disease, diabetes, depression, in some cases herbal abortions, all mostly with little formal medical training. Why do we do this? Because we are following a traditional heritage that has been unjustifiably marginalized by the dominant society, we have a desire to help those who suffer, we have a love for earth and earth medicine, and in many cases consider it a sacred calling, so we break what we believe is an unjust law. Some of us doing our best to follow traditional ways even stand on religious freedom in doing this.<div><br></div><div>Clearly the poaching show displayed a gambit of individuals from the most base of the base; those gaming the system on disability, treks all over the Appalacians on foot gathering root, and has no consciousness or desire to leave any root behind; plants unripe fruits; does not allow the plants to fully fruit, and clearly is motivated by his desire to work independently under the precept of putting food on his table for his family. One of the other gents was clearly looking at his land as a sustainable source of income for his family and was care taking land that was in his family for generations. Unfortunately, he needed to do it with a rifle. And then the specific brokers portrayed are clearly there to cash in on whatever they can get, when they get it, regardless of how they get it and regardless of whether there is anything left next year let alone for future generations. Many Cape Cod fishermen are the same way. They know if they fish deeper than approved limits (the reproduction pool) they will get a good catch but future years will be sparse and possibly wiped out. They know it and they still do it. Unfortunately, I believe this is also the overall societal view today. The most environmentally conscious of us still have cell phones, cars, computers, etc. even though most of us know that habitats are being devastated to mine the minerals needed for our pleasure, convenience, and work. It is ultimately an US thing not a US and THEM thing; we all just draw our lines at different places. The modern society breeds this disconnect with what is real and sustainable and ultimately, I believe that is what is at issue. A disconnect between humans and the cycle of life. When we lack consciousness to self regulate, that is when laws, right and wrong, come in. Unfortunately, it is more difficult and time consuming to cultivate consciousness, especially in a materially driven society. As a number of folks have <br>said, this film captures only a part of the wildcrafting story. <br>Unfortunately,I do think it reflects a real part of the wildcrafting <br>community, albeit not the whole wildcrafting community. The fact that <br>the few gents shown represent a big part of the total tonnage of Amer <br>ginseng that is collected is something worthy of acknowledging. That <br>individual wildcrafters, such as the gent poaching on federal lands <br>and the others on private property are trying to put food on their <br>table and simply not caring about the environment or propriety of <br>doing it in a sustainable way. The brokers and dealers also reflect a <br>desire to "get every bit of it that is out there", put competitors out <br>of business, and simply get their piece of the pie with no <br>consciousness or caring. Cape cod fishermen are the same; they <br>basically say they want to get what they can while they can and that <br>is about it. This puts those wanting to do it the right way at a <br>disadvantage, artificially drives costs up or down, and undermines <br>efforts to promote a consciousness of sustainability. To me, for <br>threatened species there should be a paper trail required for all <br>those brokers, how much they got from who,e and document that all <br>material harvested was done legally. The "disabled" guy clearly should <br>be penalized just with the evidence this documentary provides; that he <br>is probably collecting some type of disability while he has the <br>ability to trek all over the Appalacians and his clear knowledge that <br>he is doing it illegally. Unfortunately, all the education in the <br>world will not stop folks like him from getting what they can, when <br>they can, and however they can and threaten the entire tradition of <br>wildcrafting. The only solution is to go after those types with <br>penalties and also focus on the brokers of illegally obtained <br>material.
