Summary:
Ethnobotany and ethnopharmacology have been neglected and underdeveloped in the Americas compared to other regions of the world. This is due to the widely acknowledged damage done by centuries of removal of Indigenous Peoples from their traditional lands, genocide by war, disease, and through attempted cultural assimilation via residential schools or forced adoptions. As these issues have become known to society in general and efforts for reconciliation have begun, Indigenous cultures are showing resilience and resurgence. There is also a broad interest in learning from Indigenous perspectives.
This special issue demonstrates the deep connections and knowledge about native plants held by Indigenous Peoples throughout the Americas. A goal of this special issue is to move out of the colonial era and encourage healthy collaborations in research and the generation of knowledge about plants and fungi. The articles included in this special issue point to a way forward on these processes.
The articles included in this special issue, illustrate the breadth of topics related to ethnobotany and ethnopharmacology, as well as interconnections among plants, landscapes, science, medicine, culture, language, politics, society, and history. We sincerely hope that the material included will encourage further dialogue, thought, and actions in strengthening these interconnections.
