NONTIMBER FOREST PRODUCTS IN THE UNITED STATES IN A CHANGING CLIMATE

November 2, 2018
1 pm Eastern/12 pm Central/ 11 am Mountain/ 10 am Pacific

USFS has published a new report: Nontimber forest products in the United
States under changing conditions that presents the first-ever synthesis on
forest plants and mushrooms used for food, medicine, and other purposes by
businesses and individuals. With contributions from 60 experts drawn from
universities, private industry, nonprofit organizations and federal science
agencies, this report brings together the most recent science on the
ecology, economics, social, and cultural significance of nontimber forest
products and implications of increasingly fluctuating environmental
conditions for them. This presentation will provide key findings from the
report, with examples of key nontimber forest product species such as
American ginseng and wild rice.

Speakers:

   - James L. Chamberlain, Research Forest Products Technologist with the
USDA Forest Service Southern Research Station in Blacksburg, VA. His
research focuses on the utilization of non-timber forest products (NTFPs)
and the sustainable management of forest resources to ensure the
   availability of NTFPs.
   - Marla R. Emery, Research Geographer with the USDA Forest Service,
Northern Research Station in Burlington, VT. Her work focuses on the role
of forests in providing food and sustaining cultures in the United States
   and beyond.

*This is part of the First Friday All Climate Change Talks (FFACCTs)
Webinars and the presentation will follow an update on USDA Forest Service
and Climate Hub activities.**
