RE: Herbarium at the University of Maryland – Funding Cut

The message, below, was forwarded to me by a family member who is a biologist with the State of Maryland. I pass it along to see if additional support can be provided to this august institution.

Best regards,

FAH

Subject: Maryland's Herbarium in Trouble

I'm writing to share some disturbing news. We recently learned that the University of Maryland, home to the Norton-Brown Herbarium, is planning to drastically reduce funding for the herbarium. Unless reversed, this decision is likely to result in closure of Maryland's premier herbarium. As you surely know, ongoing collections like these are critical to the study of our natural environment. No other herbarium comes close to the Norton Brown Herbarium in the scope of its Maryland collections. Actual specimens are the most reliable--perhaps the only reliable--basis for determining the existence and geographic distribution of plant species, as well as their genetic and morphological characteristics. Especially during times of rapid environmental change, this data is critically important.
The MNPS Board of Directors sent a letter to University officials urging them to continue supporting the Herbarium. Here is a link to the letter on our website: MNPS-Norton Brown Letter<http://mdflora.org/EmailTracker/LinkTracker.ashx?linkAndRecipientCode=Jd3ebXD4kiAfYA8vRnQIKVew6Vq3vUXTCOHLN7jZQ7fUG2cVgYwfMJP6I2AXdOwShMXZxH0%2fWBsmounviLey9KOHrxwFtUGkInogLA%2buJLg%3d>.

Please show the University that the naturalist community in Maryland cares about the Norton-Brown Herbarium. Here is the email contact information.
