I urge proceeding with great caution. Although he might be very supportive
of "doing the right thing", he has no control over how much of what he says
will be included in the program. If his viewpoint only makes up 5% of the
program.

Just my thoughts. I also heard there was another program in the making, but
what I heard made it sound very much like the one airing now.

Subject: [MPWG] Another American Ginseng show...

Hello All,

I just received a phone call from an individual in North Carolina who is
apparently a cast member on another show about American Ginseng diggers.
Although I did ask, he was unable to tell me the name of the show and the
network producing it. However, he did say it was a different production
company and network than that of the 'Appalachian Outlaws'.

Has anyone heard of this? He said it was going to air in April/May.

In addition, he was calling United Plant Savers to find out more about our
conservation and education efforts in regards to American Ginseng. He
described his character as 'one who really cares about this plant', and
being totally against characters like those in the Appalachian Outlaws
series. He spoke of his harvesting techniques, 'not digging until the
berries are red, and replanting the berries' like he was taught to do as a
child. He definitely gave me the impression that he wants his character to
speak on behalf of good stewardship and responsible harvesting. He also
spoke about poaching problems in NC, especially a while back with the
government shut-down, and that there are characters on this show that will
indeed resemble those of the Appalchian Outlaws series.

I was not able to ascertain exactly what he was wanting to achieve by
calling us, but I believe he has good intentions. I was careful, as always
with media-related individuals , to say little and listen much.

Please let us know if you have heard about this upcoming series. Thank you
for your time.

Sincerely,

Erika G. Galentin
