THIS IS ADDRESSED ESPECIALLY TO THOSE OF YOU WHO LIVE IN GREATER DC
AREA

ALAIN TOUWAIDE will deliver the following lecture on
archaeobotany, organized by the Biblical Archaeological Forum [1].

MEDICINES IN THE ANCIENT WORLD

8:00 PM, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 11,
2013 | JCCGW
Sponsored by Adat Shalom Synagogue
This lecture will take
place at JCC of Greater Washington, 6125 MONTROSE ROAD, ROCKVILLE, MD.

Archaeobotany is on the verge of making substantial contributions to
the understanding of ancient life. Plants have been found in
archaeological excavations, such as traces on ceramics and in derivative
products including medicines and perfumes. DNA sequencing now allows for
the identification of these invisible plants. Experimental research -
_archaeology of the invisible_ - is now aimed at identifying the
components of late 2nd-century medicines recovered from the eastern
Mediterranean shipwreck Relitto del Pozzino. The lecture will present
research on the medicines of the shipwreck and illustrate the
possibilities the new tools in this new discipline open for
archaeologists and historians.

analysis done to retrieve the ancient DNA from these Graeco-Roman
medicines.

Thanks for your attention and best,

Emanuela Appetiti
