Dear Medicinal Plant Working Group Members:
For the ninth year in a row (!), thanks to the ongoing leadership of Dr.
James Chamberlain, of the U.S. Forest Service, MPWG members are invited to
be part of a long-term citizen science project to monitor and inventory
the Appalachian-native medicinal plant, black cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa,
or Actaea racemosa, depending how you look at it!).
What's it all about? Sustainability! Black cohosh is harvested for use in
medicinal preparations to combat the symptoms of menopause! These projects
are conducted on federal land and will assist us in understanding how this
species responds to harvest over time.
No experience is needed! You?ll be part of a team comprised of a science
leader and other volunteers. Teams work together for about 2.5 days
assessing plots where black cohosh grows in the wild - you'll learn new
skills (using cool hand-held data recorders) and meet new people! All you
need is an interest in plants and a desire to get outdoors!
For more information and to volunteer, check out the GREEN BOX on the MPWG
homepage: http://www.nps.gov/plants/medicinal/index.htm
Come get your feet wet with us! (Well, they may not really get wet!)
Hope to see you there!
-Patricia
