[MPWG] HR2749 and USA-corporate alliances

I feel HR 2749 is indeed a concern. This type of legislation should apply
only to large agribusiness, where contamination at one point can be wildly
disseminated in a huge array of products at distant locales and may need to
be tracked. Also, there no doubt an implicit concern about risk
from bioterrorism. But small farms, which not only do no pose this risk but
are the best hope for real cure, could be put out of business with this
type of legislation.

This letter, found on the website of the National Family Farm Coalition,
puts it succinctly:

http://www.nffc.net/Pressroom/Letters/2009/11.10.09%20Senate%20-%20Food%20Safety.pdf

Obama's nominations to the USDA and other agriculture-policy related
positions clearly confirm a consolidated alliance between the federal
government and multinational agribusiness, such as Monsanto. To date, these
include Tom Vilsack, Michael Taylor, Roger Beachy and Islam Siddiqui.

So the problem is that legislation like HR 2749 gets in because of the real
food safety risks imposed by the very nature of large agribusiness, but
large agribusiness is systematically being placed in full control of federal
regulation development and implementation.

. . .

It's time to grow our own.

best regards,

Gena Fleming
