Weaving Herbs into Your Nursing Practice
June 2, 2007 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

We were asked by Kate Gilday of Coldbrook New York to create a workshop for
nurses who
want to learn how to begin to blend herbs into their nursing practice.
So Bonnie and I came up with a workshop on what we believe will be
informative as well as
a supportive arena where nurses, herbalists and other wellness seekers
can explore
the many possibilities in herbalism for our selves, friends and clients.

The Class:
How do we as nurses and healers integrate time-honored plant therapies into
our scope of practice? Bonnie Kavanagh and Marguerite Uhlmann-Bower both
registered nurse herbalists will explore the use of botanicals in potential
nursing venues.
Old knowledge - in the Oral Tradition of passing information will blend
in the new knowledge - in Evidenced-Based practice for a therapeutic
model with a global perspective.

A short review of traditional herbal terminology and their applications will
lead to the bulk of the day on various case study scenario's: safety
issues when using herbs in conjunction with medications or pathology; review
of real life interactions; survey results of about 200 practicing wellness
seekers - naturopathic doctors, herbalists and nurses on their first hand
experience with specific herb-med interactions.
Comparisons will be made on how we can appreciate both the nursing diagnosis
model and differential constitutional case taking, for a more complete
holistic care environment; materia medica's review on 10 common herbs;
resources, contacts, texts to further ones education.

Last but most definitely not least - to reflect on how Nature's health is
jsut a metaphor for our very own.

May our walk be sweet and gentle
as we gather our roots once again.
