Our farm is .National Organic Program (N.O.P ) certified wild crops and this conference is of great interest. There are few protocols in wild crop harvest, especially in our N.O.P. guidelines. The 101 issues for us on restoration vrs cultivation per certification. There is a huge problem with keeping invaises out of our forest. I want to enhance biodiversity without losing our "wild crop" classification.

We are also working on creating a network for farms interested in wild crop potential and cooperative product development. If anyone on the list is going to the conference, we like to network with you. There does not seem to be much of a bridge between the NOP and the conservation/restoration community even though organic standards require biodivesity considerations. (See, Wild Farm Alliance for conservation/biodiversity considerations).

ALSO, if there is a herbalist working with floral waters and hydrosol on the list, we would like to talk to you about our native plant hydrosols. I have started working with them on this page: http://www.pinenut.com//wild_flower_hydrosols.htm. One of our targets is to cooperatively produce these products with other small farmer and organic farmers who have set aside woodlands to fill their biodiversity requirments.
All ideas and input is welcome.

Subject: [MPWG] Fw: Sustainable wild collection of plants - workshop at IFOAM Conference May 2006

Below is an announcement for an upcoming workshop of sustainable wild collection.

  - - - - -

Background to the workshop: This workshop is part of the still ongoing development process of the ISSC-MAP, which is being implemented by the Medicinal Plant Specialist Group of the World Conservation Union (IUCN), WWF Germany and TRAFFIC, and the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN). So far the draft ISSC-MAP has been discussed and tested for its applicability in several field projects.
Trade in “organic” wild products is becoming more and more important, not only within the food sector but also in the personal health care and the medicinal herb sector. These sectors overlap as one species is often used for several end products. Currently available certification criteria or standards addressing wild collection, as for example organic certification schemes, often do not provide sufficient guidance to ensure the long term survival of wild populations. The International Standard for Sustainable Wild Collection of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (ISSC-MAP) aims to provide this guidance in form of a set of principles and criteria that can be applied to the management of medicinal and aromatic plant species and their ecosystems. It could also serve as a basic tool for audit and certification of wild collection in the organic sector.

  Dear colleagues,
We are happy to announce our workshop "Sustainable Wild Collection of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants: Workshop on implementation strategies for the international standard". This meeting will take place on May 5th in Teslic, Bosnia and Herzegovina, as a side event to the 1st IFOAM Conference on Organic Wild Production.

The meeting addresses practitioners active in the collection, management, trade and processing of wild plants, with focus on South-Eastern Europe: communities, buyers, processors and users of plants, developers of standards and certifications systems, governmental and intergovernmental organisations in the sectors and service providers to any of these groups.

Aim of the event is to involve practitioners active in the collection, trade and processing of wild plants in the development of concrete implementation strategies for wild collection criteria, which are adapted to their working and market situations.

Please find attached further information and the registration form.
For background information please visit our project website http://www.floraweb.de/MAP-pro/ or http://www.ifoam.org/events/ifoam_conferences/ISSC_MAP_Workshop.html

Please forward this announcement to other interested individuals and organisations.

We are looking forward to meeting you in Teslic.
