United Plant Savers Conference Set for July
“Planting the Future,” the upcoming United Plant Savers (UpS) conference,
will address several issues that strike at the heart of the herbal
products industry when it convenes on July 30 in Williams, Oregon.
“The very success of herbal products is exerting unprecedented pressure on
certain species in the wild,” said AHPA President Michael McGuffin. “Those
who intend to be in this business in the future must pay attention to the
health and sustainability of the plants that support it. UpS is a vital
force in ensuring the future of those plants.” AHPA is a sponsoring member
of UpS.
UpS, recognizing the increasing pressure on plant resources in the US as
well as from other countries, researches and protects plants and their
habitats, and educates the public on these issues. Their “At Risk” and “To
Watch” lists have focused attention on indigenous North American medicinal
plants that are in decline due to expanding popularity and shrinking
habitat and range. UpS also preserves and encourages others to establish
botanical sanctuaries to protect and restore biodiversity.
The July 30 conference will be held at the Herb Pharm farm in Williams,
Oregon. A list of presenters and activities is on the registration form,
posted on the AHPA website at http://www.ahpa.org/05_07_UpS_PTF.pdf. Early
registration ends July 1. Lodging and directions are posted at
http://www.herb-pharm.com/ups.html.
Founded in 1994, the UpS mission is to protect native medicinal plants of
the United States and Canada and their native habitat while ensuring an
abundant renewable supply of medicinal plants for generations to come. The
UpS website is at http://www.unitedplantsavers.org.
