Here's a link to an interesting report on the protective effect of the mangroves and coral reefs, which contains quotes from several Asian scientists and officials.

Thanks for forwarding this information.I have observed that the vegetation has faced the force of waves at first and later the flooding has resulted in uprooting of plants. In Indian ocean Tsunami is new thing.I am eager to know the comments of the experts living in countries at Pacific ocean.Whether the vegetation helps in slowing down the speed of waves?

To Fellow MPWG'ists - Some of my fellow mpwg's may be
voracious surfers and found this already... but I just
found it minutes ago. This puts another spin on our
discussion of vegetation devastation and the evolution
    of tropical plants.

I can claim ignorance - being an inhabitant of the
interior US - this level of destruction is far more
than I have knowledge... I guess I am not quite as old
    as dirt yet:>)
