FYI -

In this issue of Herbal Dispatch, there is an article on goldenseal. I
realize that the Dispatch is aimed at growers and, therefore, the focus of
the article was on cultivation. I would like to add little more
information about the species' conservation status.

Goldenseal is listed on Appendix II of the Convention on International
Trade in Endangered Species of Fauna and Flora (CITES). Here is a link to
a fact sheet prepared by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service :
http://international.fws.gov/pdf/go.pdf. Goldenseal is also listed as
Threatened by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada
(COSEWIC). To find out the status of goldenseal in your state, contact
your local Natural Heritage Program at:
http://www.natureserve.org/visitLocal/

You can also find information on this species using the NatureServe
Explorer, but bear in mind that this information is a little out of date.
Here is the url:
      www.natureserv.org/explorer/
Click on "Search the database for species"
      Plug in "Hydrastis canadensis"

Get informed and spread the word!
