2nd Annual Symposium, "Appalachian Opportunities: Medicinal and Aromatic
Plants (MAP) -Production, Business and Applications" Beckley, WV. January
15-17, 2004. Organized by the Medicinal Botanical Program at Mountain State
University and USDA-Agricultural Research Service- Appalachian Farming
Systems Research Center in Beaver ,WV. Content will include trade and
poster sessions, technical program, workshops, round table discussion,
tours of the USDA-ARS station and an evening reception with the Black
Mountain Bluegrass Boys. Topics will include: Overview of MAP industry,
Regulations, Natural Products for Pest Control, Using MAP in medical
practice, Herb-drug interactions, Product development, Growing and
Processing techniques, Antioxidants and Good health. Conference activities
are directed toward growers, business and health professionals. The keynote
speaker is James Duke, an international expert in medicinal plants and
author of "The Green Pharmacy". Expert presenters include Steve Duke
(USDA-ARS, Mississippi), Ed Fletcher (Strategic Sourcing, North Carolina),
James Joseph (USDA-ARS, Tufts University), Byeng-Ryel Min (Texas A&M) and
