ABOUT THE PRESENTATION: As the endangered species capital of the world, Hawaii has over 400 listed species, over 100 of which occur on US Army Garrison Hawaii lands (USAG-HI), the most of any Department of Defense installation nationwide. Through a cooperative
agreement with the University of Hawaii, the US Army Natural Resources Program on Oahu (ANRPO) manages over 50 rare plant taxa both on and off USAG-HI lands. This presentation will highlight the evolution of both in situ and ex situ approaches to rare plant
conservation at ANRPO over the last 25 plus years, the many challenges confronted, and successes achieved in stabilizing rare plant populations on Oahu. Furthermore, it will emphasize seed banking as an essential tool in Hawaiian plant conservation and the
important role of partnerships and collaborations in rare plant management.

ABOUT OUR PRESENTERS: Kapua grew up hiking with her family and friends and these experiences fostered her love of Hawaiʻi’s forests and oceans. Kapua graduated from the University of California at Davis with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Botany. She
interned with the Nature Conservancy of Hawaiʻi and the U.S. Geological Survey. She has worked for the Army’s Natural Resource Program on Oʻahu since 1995, first as an intern, then Federal Biologist and now as the Natural Resources Program Manager. When Kapua
began working with the Natural Resource Program, she was one of only 4 staff, currently there are 50+ staff hired through a cooperative agreement with the University of Hawaiʻi. The Army’s Natural Resource Program conserves native plants, animals and habitats
in the Waiʻanae and Koʻolau Mountains and helps the Army balance mission needs with environmental protection.

For Over twenty years Tim has been working to build capacity for plant conservation and ecological restoration. He started with the US Army’s Natural Resource Program on O‘ahu in 2016 as the Seed Bank Manager and currently oversees the rare plant program. Prior
to joining the Army's natural resources team, Tim worked extensively in the areas of seed conservation and restoration plant material development in the Eastern United States with Seeds of Success, the MidAtlantic Regional Seed Bank and the Greenbelt Native
Plant Center, New York City Parks and Recreation.
