Garlic mustard removal--questions about project<BR></FONT><BR></DIV>
<DIV></DIV>
<P>Dear Marc,</P>
<P>Has some questions about your mustard project:</P>
<P>1.) How many square feet or acres are you working on?<SPAN
class=031055020-18032014><FONT color=#0000ff size=2
face=Arial> </FONT></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN class=031055020-18032014><FONT color=#0000ff face=Arial><STRONG>400
acres</STRONG></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN class=031055020-18032014> </SPAN>2.) Do you physically remove the
plants from the site or use them as mulch to kill other plants nearby?<SPAN
class=031055020-18032014><FONT color=#0000ff size=2
face=Arial> </FONT></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN class=031055020-18032014><FONT face=Arial><STRONG><FONT
color=#0000ff>spot spray or remove and bag
</FONT> </STRONG></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P>3.) Ever try knocking down the plants, then use the mustard stems as
mulch?<SPAN class=031055020-18032014><FONT color=#0000ff size=2
face=Arial> </FONT></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN class=031055020-18032014><FONT color=#0000ff
face=Arial><STRONG>no</STRONG></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN class=031055020-18032014><FONT color=#0000ff
face=Arial><STRONG> </STRONG></FONT></SPAN>4.) After the mustard is
managed, what natives are planted/sown to take up that space?<SPAN
class=031055020-18032014><FONT color=#0000ff size=2
face=Arial> </FONT></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN class=031055020-18032014><FONT color=#0000ff face=Arial><STRONG>They
come back in within 5 years very well on their own. (The other major
invasives are also removed)</STRONG></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P>5.) Ever use native grass mulch?<SPAN class=031055020-18032014><FONT
color=#0000ff size=2 face=Arial> </FONT></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN class=031055020-18032014><FONT color=#0000ff
face=Arial><STRONG>No </STRONG></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P>6.) Ever tested the soil where the mustards are growing, to see if nutrient
deficiencies are helping the mustards grow there instead of the local natives?
In California, Italian thistle and medusa head grasses thrive in soils
where the potassium has been grazed out below the threshold needed for native
seedling survival, for example.<SPAN class=031055020-18032014><FONT
color=#0000ff size=2 face=Arial> </FONT></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN class=031055020-18032014><FONT color=#0000ff face=Arial><STRONG>It is
found in all habitats</STRONG></FONT></SPAN></P>
<P><SPAN class=031055020-18032014> </SPAN></P>
<P>Sincerely, Craig Dremann (650) 325-7333</P>

<P>> On Friday, because the weather was satisfactory again, I removed a lot
of<BR>> garlic mustard for two reasons. My strategy is to get at least 80 %
of the<BR>> second year plants removed before April so that 1, we do not miss
a single<BR>> adult with so many seeds, and 2, to have less work to do during
the<BR>> unpleasent tick season. Cheers.<BR>><BR>><BR>> Marc Imlay,

Subject: update for garlic mustard
removal.<BR>><BR>><BR>><BR>><BR>> Congratulations
everyone,<BR>><BR>> This year we have removed 100% of the adult garlic
mustard from Montpelier<BR>> Mansion Nature Trail, Little Paint Branch Park,
Cherry Hill Park, and<BR>> Magruder Woods in Prince George's County, and
Swann Park in Charles<BR>> County.<BR>> We searched the entire 400 acres
of these 5 parks and, hopefully, did not<BR>> miss any. Remember for next
year: do not miss a single adult because of<BR>> the<BR>> seeds. The spray
treatments before seeds started forming were for small<BR>> mono-cultural
patches.<BR>><BR>> For Magruder Woods we completed the routine Trumbule
Trail side and we<BR>> began<BR>> the Western side in preparation for new
leadership for that side of the<BR>> park. Montpelier took 1 person during
one day. The traditional Trumbule<BR>> Trail side of Magruder took 27
volunteers a total of 32 person hours.<BR>> Swann<BR>> Park took 8
volunteers a total of 58 person hours. Cherry Hill took 5<BR>> volunteers 29
person hours and Little Paint Branch Park took 33 volunteers<BR>> 84 person
hours.<BR>><BR>> Marc Imlay, PhD,<BR>> Conservation biologist, Park
