I have mixed emotions about cutting down on copied
messages. I'm not so sure it's a good idea if taken to extremes, but my policy
is to try to follow the moderator's wishes--if I can understand and interpret
them correctly. My biggest concerns are the added work involved that could
(does) discourage posting (this may, in some instances, of course, be seen as an
advantage) and the additional work and sometimes frustration involved if one
must try to trace back the thread to its beginning. Without subject-line
discipline, this can be next to impossible. So while I understand the concerns
giving rise to complaints about too many messages, I'm not so sure that the cure
is not worse than the disease. My email is flooded, but I have a well-worn
delete key. I have seen this phenomenon elsewhere many times. "Netiquette" is
sometimes (frequently) a bully-word for a few trying to dictate their own snap
judgments to the many. Common courtesy and common sense, while increasingly
rare, need not be abandoned entirely to satisfy the persnickety. But by all
means, e-liminate the negative and find a balance between uber-dominance and
utter obsequiousness.
