for plant and animal wildlife migration, even more so because of
climate change. About half of our species are source species and are OK in
small areas. But about half are sink species and need a way to return over time.
1,600 feet wide is an ideal width for effective corridors.

Re: [APWG] 100 qacres every 15 miles across the country-- preserve the original

to minimum meaningful contiguous area for conservation purposes for various
organism types. I fear that even if we could keep these areas 95 (or even
100) percent weed-free, disjunct areas as small as 100 acres would be useless
for the preservation of many species. (There is research that addresses
these issues [although I'm not sure of its adequacy].)

Aloha,
Philip

Dear Marc and All,

I am proposing that
in the USA, we preserve 100 acres every 15 miles
in each direction, which
would be a 1:1400 ratio in exchange for the
land we use for our
purposes?
And that would help preserve insitu the native plant and
animal
diversity we have across the nation. And perhaps these
preserves
should be owned by the local indigenous peoples?

Plus these
areas could possibly be used as carbon sinks for our fossil
fuel and coal
burning, to help sequester some of the carbon that we
are puitting into the
air? And that those area be restored to
99%
weed-freeness?
