I noticed the same trend in many of my research plots. It was nice to
see some dead <i>Microstegium</i> seedlings but unfortunately I don't
think it will have much, if any, effect on invasion dynamics. The
reproductive strategy of <i>Microstegium</i> is such that they produce
many seeds at a low success rate such that populations self-thin during
the season anyway. Therefore, while the early freeze killed off many
seedlings, dropping the per square meter density from thousands upon
thousands down to just thousands probably won't decrease overall
invasion levels or the impact on the native community. But here's
hoping....<br>

<div>In early April the Microstegium in central West Virginia was
emerging and was about 1/4" tall when the big freeze hit. We had
several consecutive days of night time temperatures in the low 20's or
colder. It now appears that a majority of the first
germination Japanese stiltgrass is dead in much of the region and what
did not get killed was severely damaged by the very cold temperatures.</div>

<div>It will be interesting to see how thick the second germination
will be when the weather warms. </div>
