*On the medicinal plant side of things, we have often "joked" of having a
Journal of What Didn't Work - because it's hard to know what people have
already that didn't work, since that rarely gets published. So kudos to
Montgomery Botanical Center for finding an outlet for this information!*

The April 2013 issue of
HortTechnology<http://horttech.ashspublications.org/content/23/2.cover-expansion>features
new research by Tracy Magellan, Chad Husby, Stella Cuestas, and M.
Patrick Griffith which found that spent coffee grounds do not control Cycad
Aulacaspis Scale (Asian Cycad Scale, CAS). Spent coffee grounds have been
reputed to treat cycad aulacaspis scale, but in this controlled study they
showed no effect. This scale insect, *Aulacaspis
yasumatsui<http://www.freshfromflorida.com/pi/pest-alerts/aulacaspis-yasumatsui.html/>
*, is a very destructive pest of cycads. CAS has not only been responsible
for killing many of the ornamental *Cycas* plantings in South Florida, but
also threatens Guam’s native cycad species with extinction. Controlling CAS
is therefore a high priority for conservation horticulture.
