Topic: Cooperative Weed Management Areas (CWMAs)

What is a CWMA, you say? Well come find out! Damien Ossi, a wildlife
biologist in DDOE's Fisheries and Wildlife Division, will join us to talk
about what CWMAs are, how they work, the need and purpose of them in our
region, grant resources available, and lessons learned from the District
of Columbia's Department of the Environment (DDOE). We'll follow-up with a
discussion about forming a CWMA in the Northern Virginia area and other
ideas for cooperative management strategies.

RSVP today!

Speaker Bio

Damien grew up in Takoma Park, Maryland, and currently lives in Greenbelt,
MD. He has a BA in Biology from St. Mary's College of Maryland, and an MEM
in resource ecology from the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke
University. He has worked at the USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center,
where he raised endangered Whooping Cranes (and acquired scars from angry
and protective momma-cranes), and he has worked as a conservation
biologist at Audubon North Carolina, managing coastal island habitat for
nesting waterbirds and shorebirds (and dodging shipping traffic on the
Cape Fear River). At DDOE, in addition to working on invasive plants, he
runs a backyard wildlife habitat program and monitors invertebrate
populations in natural areas. Damien enjoys photography, hiking and
bluegrass music.

This is an open, public event. All interested and involved with invasive
plant management are welcome to join. The presentation is free to attend.
Please feel free to forward this announcement onto to others who may be
interested.
