Special Announcements & Requests:

1.
Please join us for the 3rd annual Virginia State-wide Invasive Plant
Removal (IPR) Day on Saturday, May 7th! The only invasive event of its kind
in the nation! Register you site project at the IPR Day website at
www.virginiamasternaturalist.org/invasives. The website include a press
release, site leader guide, facts, tips, and other resources. Most of all
we will help to publicize your event as part of a larger state-wide network
to garner and show support for the issues of invasives.

2.
Do you oversee a volunteer-based invasive plant management program in the
Mid-Atlantic region (DC, DE, MD, NJ, PA, VA, WV)? If so, please register it
with the Invasive Plant Volunteers Directory by completing the short
registration form at www.surveymonkey.com/s/InvasivePlantVolunteers. The
directory will eventually be posted to the new Mid-Atlantic Invasive Plant
Council (MAIPC) website, formerly the Mid-Atlantic Exotic Pest Plant
Council (MA-EPPC). Ultimately understanding the number and distribution of
volunteer groups in our area will help to: (1) recognize the significance
of volunteer efforts in restoring invaded lands, (2) identify areas in need
of volunteer assistance, (3) help connect interested volunteers with a
suitable group, (4) build a stronger network of invasive plant workers in
the region, (5) and build support for potential funding of volunteer-based
programs. Thank you to the staff at the University of Georgia Center for
Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health for helping to make this directory
happen.

3.
The National Zoo is looking for large stands (1 acre or more) of clean (no
history of pesticide use or other toxins, not near road with car pollution
contamination) bamboo that can be harvested long-term (not a one time
permanent removal) for feeding their zoo animals, especially their pandas
on loan from China. Exact species in need are Phyllostachys aurea (golden
bamboo) or Phyllostachys aureosulcata (yellow grove bamboo), and occasional
use of Pseudosasa japonica (arrow bamboo). Contact Matt Neff at
NeffM at si.edu for more information or to offer up available stands. The
National Zoo staff understand this is a difficult question to ask of the
invasive plant control community since it is for long-term harvest, but
this community is also most likely to know where such stands exist. They'd
like to at least make use of these stands until permanent eradication is
actively pursued on such sites (usually private land).
