HAINES JUNCTION, Yukon Territory -- A veil of smoke settled over the 
forest in the shadow of the St. Elias Mountains, in a wilderness whose 
spruce trees stood tall and gray, a deathly gray even in the greenest 
heart of a Yukon summer.
