[APWG] FW: [ma-eppc] mainland eradications

A few of the many instances of local eradication of (presumably mostly/all) small incipient stands of escaped exotics/invasives -- good work by whomever involved!. Note that removal of the last/only occurrence from a state or other jurisdiction is considered floristically to be eradication from that entire area, and may casually sound much more impressive than it may have actually been -- "Kudzu Eradicated from the State of Washington" sounds great, but state-wide eradication of kudzu from Alabama would be far bigger news! -- Larry

Hi Marc and Suchitra and others,

There are literally hundreds of incipient invasive plant populations that have been eliminated over the last century in the US and elsewhere by states and local governments engaged in early detection and rapid response efforts. But, as Dan Simberloff (2003) once pointed out, such efforts are woefully underdocumented. As part of my doctoral dissertation, I'm attempting to redress that problem by compiling dozens of eradication case summaries, particularly in California and New Zealand. But that work is not finished yet.

In the meantime, here's a small sample of mainland eradications: 5 invasive plant species eradicated from the state of Washington (Herniaria cinerea, Isatis tinctoria [dyer's woad], Pueraria montana [kudzu], Solanum eleagnifolium, Centaurea tricocephala) and 13 invasive plant species from the state of California (Carthamus leucocaulos, Cuscuta reflexa, Euphorbia serrata, Halimodendron halodendron, Helianthus ciliaris, Heteropogon contortus, Prosopis strombulifera, Solanum cardiophylum, Solanum dimidiatum, Sphaerophysa salsula, Tagetes minuta, Zygophyllum fabago, Salvia virgata). Check out Zika (2006) and O'Connell (1997) for more details.

cheers,

Suchitra would like examples of successful EDRR on the mainland. Cheers.
Marc

You mentioned Miconia in Hawaii. Is there an example of a successful
eradication on the mainland?
