                        POSITION VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

                   Position:                   Coordinator, UC Sea Grant
                   Extension Ballast Water Education Program  ( Position #
                   20070250)

Description:             The purpose of this position is to serve as a
coordinator for the UC Sea Grant Extension Ballast Water Education Project.
The major goal of the project is to provide a forum for information
exchange between various groups (industry, agencies, and academic
scientists) and education about ballast water management and aquatic
nuisance species. This position will also spend time assisting with
development of school curriculum focusing on ballast water and aquatic
invasive species (AIS).  This project is a 1.5 year West Coast wide
outreach program supported through extramural grants, based in the San
Francisco Bay Area, and lead by University of California Sea Grant Marine
Advisor, Jodi Cassell. This position will function independently, working
in cooperation and supervised by Marine Advisor Cassell. Additional

Duties:  This position provides assistance with development and
implementation of educational programs focused on ANS and ballast
management.  The incumbent will participate in all phases of the project,
including development and administration for educational seminars,
evaluation of outreach programs, and grant administration.  However, the
successful applicant will play a lead role in four key areas:
       coordination of ballast water educational forums and development of
       project outreach materials, including editing and soliciting articles
       for a biannual newsletter and research and development of school
       curriculum materials. Assist with development of and serve as the
       lead staff in implementing evaluation of project outreach activities.
       Represent the project at off-site meetings including meetings focused
       on ballast management and existing maritime industry conferences and
       events.  Develop oral presentations, posters, and panel proposals
       focusing on project activities and AIS Management for such events.
       Participate in general administrative and record-keeping functions,
       including financial record-keeping and reporting, upkeep of the
       project mailing list, and assisting with project communications and
       mailings.
       Attend project meetings and events, and take a lead role with on-site
       logistics and note-taking, as needed.

Location: Pleasant Hill (SF Bay area) or Davis, CA.  Ability and means to
travel and liability insurance on vehicle used are required.   Travel in or
out of state to meetings approximately two to four times per month.

Skills and Knowledge:
       Degree or coursework in natural resources, environmental science, or
       environmental education. Work experience is not required, but is
       preferred.
       The ability to analyze complex scientific information and develop
       outreach materials presenting this information to individuals with
       varied backgrounds and levels of expertise.
       Effective written communication skills. Experience, ability, and/or
       willingness to perform a variety writing tasks including editing of
       newsletter articles, summarization of meeting minutes, and
       potentially assistance with grant-writing.
       The ability to plan, reason, and work independently/with limited
       supervision. The ability to work and manage time independently is
       mandatory.
       Excellent interpersonal skills. The ability to communicate
       professionally and interact well with individuals from varied
       backgrounds,
       Willingness and ability to work as a team member in terms of setting
       up, running, providing follow-up for project meetings and other
       outcomes, and maintaining good communications and a high level of
       coordination with other project team members.
       Experience with grant or other types of record-keeping, reporting
       preferred.


                   Salary:                       Min: $39,960 - $45,402,
                   dependent on experience.  Excellent benefits.
