Invasive plants folks -
A new book will be coming out through University of Wisconsin Press this
July - "Invasive Plants of the
Upper Midwest: An Illustrated Guide to Their Identification and Control" by
Elizabeth J. Czarapata. This book will be an essential resource for all
concerned about the growing threat of invasive plants to native ecosystems.
Many foresters, land managers, parks, naturalists, aquatic plant managers,
fisheries staff, and others will be interested in having a copy for their
use in managing public or private lands.

The list price for paperback is $26.95. There is a 30% prepublication
discount that is currently being offered (see below). However, there is a
shipping charge of $4.50 for the first book and $1 for additional books. If
you work with an organization or agency that is interested in purchasing a
large quanity, you can get a discount in both price and shipping. You can
get a 40% discount on an order of 3-14, 42% off 15-99, or 43% off 100-249.
These prices are for "returnable" copies - in case you plan to sell them.
If you purchase over 50 copies that are "non-returnable", you can get a 50%
discount. Shipping costs would be greatly reduced as they would be shipped
in boxes. This is a great price considering that it will be a full color
guide with over 250 photos and covering about 100 plants. My agency alone
is purchasing >500 for staff and to distribute at conferences. The Invasive
Plants Association of WI is also planning on purchasing some for resale.

If you are interested in purchasing a large quanity for your staff or for
resale, please contact Andrea Christofferson (contact info below) soon.
They will be putting in the print order soon, so if there are additional
large orders coming in it would help them with knowing how many copies to
produce in this first printing.

Invasive Plants of the Upper Midwest includes more than 250 color
photos that will help anyone identify problem trees, shrubs, vines,
grasses, sedges, and herbaceous plants (including aquatic invaders).
The text offers further details of plant identification; manual,
mechanical, biological, and chemical control techniques; information
and advice about herbicides; and suggestions for related ecological
restoration and community education efforts. Also included are
literature references, a glossary, a matrix of existing and potential
invasive species in the Upper Midwest, an index with both scientific
and common plant names, advice on state agencies to contact with
invasive plant questions, and other helpful resources.

The information in this book has been carefully reviewed by staffs of
the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Bureau of Endangered
Resources and the University of Wisconsin-Madison Arboretum and other
invasive plant experts.

Betty Czarapata (1950-2003) was director of the Weed-Out Program of
the Park People of Milwaukee County, a member of the Wild Ones
Natural Landscapers and the Invasive Plants Association of Wisconsin,
and the founder of the Wind Lake Environmental Club. A schoolteacher
by profession, she created a curriculum on invasive plants for
environmental educators.
